Trainig Program PREVENTION OF ELDER ABUSE

The training program was designed for institutions and non-governmental organizations which work with the elderly or implement specific actions in order to improve the position of the elderly in Montenegrin society. The training was held in Bar, Cetinje and Podgorica and it lasted for two days in each of the cities. Organizations from Danilovgrad attended the training program in Podgorica. The aim was to improve skills of all those who work with the elderly in order to prevent discrimination and violence against this vulnerable group.

The program consisted of 4 modules of training:

1. Theoretical approaches to the problems of elder abuse:
- National and international documents dealing with the rights of the elderly and recommendations on the importance of prevention of discrimination and violence in this area;
- The marginalization of discrimination and violence against older persons in the protection system and the consequences to which it leads.

2. The phenomenon of elder abuse - types, the environment in which it occurs, conditions and risk factors.

3. Symptoms of abuse and recognition of the elderly who are at risk of becoming or have already become victims of violence.

4. Communication skills and counseling work with the elderly who are at risk of becoming or have already become victims of violence.

The program aimed to develop the following competences:

The program develops skills for organizing preventive actions against discrimination and elder abuse, and it includes:

- Early detection of risk factors and conditions that are conducive to the emergence of various forms of discrimination and violence against the elderly in the wider community, family and institutions;
- Identifying the elderly who are at risk of becoming or have already become victims of violence;
- Recognizing the symptoms of abuse;
- Adequate communication with the elderly;
- Providing support to the elderly who are at risk of becoming or have become victims of violence;
- Organization of preventive activities in the community and the realization of multi-sectoral cooperation in order to better contribute to the protection of the elderly.
